What do you think is one of the most surprising six figure jobs in the United States?  Go ahead, take a guess?  Ok, I’ll give you a clue, the highest paid ones are in Illinois.  O.K.  Still don’t know, then what about this, the median income for this profession is less than $65,000.  Still don’t know.  O.K, I’ll give you another clue, it is the job that I am in.

Yes, you guessed it.  According to a recent edition of Forbes Magazine, being a mediator is one of the most surprising six figures jobs in the United States.  I am not sure what to say to this.  Is it the fact that getting a six figure income is surprising or is it the fact that it is as a mediator.

Tammy Lenski does a great job everyday of helping mediators to get their acheived six, seven and whatever number figure incomes that they desire.  Her blog entitled Making Mediation Your Day Job is a wonderful resource for all people seeking to get into the field of mediation.  I would highly recommend having her blog as a favorite.

The reality is that it is not difficult to make mediation into a six figure income.  The problem for many people is that they want that to happen overnite.  As Tammy points out, there is a difference between someone who makes it and someone who doesn’t.  I think the difference between people who make it and don’t is partly desire.  But it is  also persistence, creativety, and an ability to create rapport.  As noted in my prior articles, entitled Three Essential Traits of a Highly Successful Mediator, these are some of the keys to being a successful mediator.

In the end, nothing beats a little elbow grease.
